The 2015 Heatwave Invitational started with an idea to celebrate the cars and the music from a time in our lives when ground-breaking changes were being made in our American Culture. The cars were flexing their muscle with the introduction of the Mustang, GTO, Grand Prix. Chevelle, Cutlass, Barracuda and the Charger. “Full Service” filling stations were selling gasoline at 22-26 cents a gallon. Gone were the Straight Eights, and in their place came the 289, 302, 318, 383, 400, 421, 440 and 455 cubic inch engines and progressive styling and ever more luxurious accessories were being added yearly by nearly every car manufacturer.
The music went from Doo Wop to Pop and Motown, to the British Invasion. Songs were telling stories of integration and civil rights, the War in Vietnam and the rebellions focused on the Selective Service System (aka The Draft), Campus Riots, Draft Card burning to Free Love and the open use of various mind-altering substances.
In the forefront of these times, was the breakthrough of what was termed the Motown Sound! Berry Gordy, the founder and President of Motown and Smokey Robinson, the Vice President, were seeking and developing some the most iconic artists of this time.
There were messages and stories of happiness, sorrow, dancing, heartbreak, marriage, war, and civil rights hitting the airwaves. Many of those songs and those tumultuous changing times are among our fondest memories for many of us all these years later.
HEATWAVE 2015 will be a 3 day weekend event at the Millennium McCormick Scottsdale Resort on Scottsdale Road at McCormick Ranch, to remember, relive, and celebrate those years that changed and influenced our lives then and still have a significant meaning to us all.
In 2015 during this Auction Weekend Invitational, we are very fortunate to have this once in a lifetime opportunity to spend an evening with one of the most Iconic Artist of this time and in Motown History. Our Featured Entertainer, Ms. Martha Reeves, of Martha and the Vandellas will be in the house. Her music broke through so many barriers and into so many cultures. Martha and the Vandellas saw it all and lived it all and gave us some of the memorable songs that we will never forget.
With this in mind, “An Evening with Ms. Martha Reeves” at the Awards Banquet on January 17th, 2015, will be an unforgettable event, as she tells us about her career at Motown and the uphill climb in both the music industry and those unsettling times in United States during the 60s.
Featured in Ms Reeves’ performance will be numerous songs from Martha and the Vandellas, as well as the opportunity to ask her some various questions. You’re sure to enjoy her friendly and openbook humor that she brings to every performance.
We have another action packed itinerary for 2015, with tours, a catered lunch on Friday, a Raffle that will surprise you, and a “Side Splitting Friday Night Banquet” in addition to our Saturday lakeside car show and the aforementioned awards banquet with its star entertainment.
This is definitely going to be another sold-out regional invitational, just as Desert Iron 2014 was.

The Millennium McCormick Scottsdale Resort, which will serve as our base for the invitational, is an idyllic retreat that features stunning lakeside views in a lush, tropical resort setting. Situated just three miles from Old Town Scottsdale, and conveniently located for those wishing to attend the auctions, the Millennium Scottsdale captures the spirit of warm Southwestern hospitality in a modern, relaxed setting. With breathtaking views of the McCormick Ranch Golf Club, Camelback Lake, the McDowell and Camelback Mountains, you couldn’t wish for a better host hotel from which to explore all that Scottsdale and Phoenix has to offer.

Take a ride out of the sprawl, and through some scenic undisturbed desert landscapes on our fun road rally to beautiful Lake Pleasant, a 10,000 acre manmade reservoir formed by the New Waddell Dam, a 400′ tall embankment dam completed in 1994, that straddles the Agua Fria River. Our outing will include a tour of the dam, including its control center, and we’ll learn about the ingenious water management infrastructure that makes our desert able to support our vibrant agricultural sector and the Valley of the Sun’s large, and ever-expanding population. The outing starts with a visit to the Central Arizona Project’s control center in North Phoenix where we will have a presentation of how water is brought into the Valley, it ’s importance to the economy and life for all in Arizona. The CAP headquarters visit also will include a tour of the control facility. After that, we will enjoy the drive out to Lake Pleasant. NOTE: Given the strategic sensitivity of the facility, government-issued photo ID is required for the tour of the New Waddell Dam, and foreign citizens will need to undergo a background check by the FBI, no later than 2 weeks in advance. After our tour of the dam, we’ll be having a professionally catered “Luau in the Desert” with traditional Hawaiian fare, such as a roast kalua pig, kahlbi ribs, spam sushi, as well as a host of thematically appropriate side dishes, all while overlooking spectacular Lake Pleasant and surrounded by the mountainous, saguaro cactus-studded desert landscape of the 23,000 acre Lake Pleasant Regional Park. Take a field trip to Desert Valley Auto Parts, in Casa Grande, AZ, one of the the largest classic car salvage yards in the country, and doubly-famous as it is the subject of the hit Discovery Channel TV show Desert Car Kings. Home to a treasure trove of unmolested classic cars and impossible-to-find parts for cars from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and more and more these days the 80s. Lunch will be professionally-catered, and we’re doing a Texas-style barbecue, with BBQ brisket, pork, and chicken, prepared onsite on a mobile 32 foot smoker.
